The Perfect Booty: Squats

Wondering if your squat technique is where it should be?

Grab a barbell, don’t load it up yet, and ask yourself the three questions below when at the bottom of your squat. They are solid reminders for developing and maintaining proper form, especially when fatigued after a long or heavy set.

But first, here’re some quick reminders from start to finish:



  • Stand with your feet a couple inches outside of your hips
  • Initiate the movement by sending your butt back first before dropping the hips down
  • As you descend, keep the weight on your heels and press your knees out
  • Once you reach the bottom of your squat, drive your chest up, keep the weight on your heels and press your knees out as your ascend

Now to the three important cues, or questions to ask yourself when at the bottom position of your squat:

  1. Is the weight on my heels? 
  2. Am I pressing my knees out? 
  3. Do I have a tall chest and am I working hard to maintain it?
